Advantages

  • WHY THE ALLIES WON
  • ----------------------
  • support from the U.S. in the form of resources and manpower (USA was the leading industrial nation at the time)
  • France and Britain were able to maintain trade and their trading connections
  • France and Britain were successful in mobilising the entire country
  • Strategic offensives at the end of the war and full use of new innovations

Disadvantages

  • WHY THE CENTRAL POWERS LOST

  • Allied blockade prevented Germany from getting resources
  • Schliefen Plan didn't work -> war on two fronts
  • U-boat warfare drew in the US
  • Weak allies (esp. Austria-Hungary - not prepared for war)
  • Bad economic situation lessened moral, since the public suffered from the blockade
  • Unorganized
  • Ludendorff Offensive failed (last-ditch effort/gamble, but German forces got farther and broke the stalemate; however, due to fatigue and arriving American forces, it failed)

Evaluation

The U.S. played a significant role during the end of the war, but throughout the war geopolitics played a significant role. Germany was surrounded, just as it feared.
