Nepal EQ case study, Apr 2015

Causes

  • Magnitude: 7.8
  • Very high population density -  Kathmandu Valley has about 13,000 people/km2 and is one of the fastest urbanising areas in S. Asia
  • Multiple Hazard Zone with steep mountains - exposure to landslides, debris, floods and earthquakes
  • Low development means local earthquake science is out of date
  • Vulnerable population - poor + socially excluded people, who are less able to absorb shocks
  • Many people build their own houses

Effects

  • 9000 deaths
  • 22,000+ injuries
  • Over 500,000 houses collapsed or had serious damages

Overall summary

The Nepal earthquake was turned into a disaster due to many factors such as the high population density, the location and the vulnerability of the population.
