Very high population density - Kathmandu Valley has about 13,000 people/km2 and is one of the fastest urbanising areas in S. Asia
Multiple Hazard Zone with steep mountains - exposure to landslides, debris, floods and earthquakes
Low development means local earthquake science is out of date
Vulnerable population - poor + socially excluded people, who are less able to absorb shocks
Many people build their own houses

Effects

9000 deaths
22,000+ injuries
Over 500,000 houses collapsed or had serious damages

The Nepal earthquake was turned into a disaster due to many factors such as the high population density, the location and the vulnerability of the population.
