Natural Law: Does human nature have an orientation to good?

Advantages

  • We strive to control our passions
  • Rules are welcomed and respected by most humans
  • Dawkins suggests we have evolved with a natural genetic tendency to be altruistic
  • We seem to share a common morality

Disadvantages

  • Humans are selfish and greedy
  • Humans have damaged the natural world
  • We need rules and laws, or we could be destructive
  • Aquinas' view is too optimistic
  • Aquinas didn't pay enough attention to the story of The Fall

Evaluation

This is a difficult question to answer, as 'good' is a hard thing to define. Most people are generally 'good', however, we have all say, told a lie. Does that mean we are still good? We are all contributing to the damage of the earth, we can all be selfish and greedy from time to time. Some people are even worse, being murderers and criminals.
