Muscular Structure and Function

Similarities

  • Postsynaptic membrane is cell surface membrane of a neurone.
  • Neurotransmitter may be ACh, noradrenaline, glutamate or another transmitter.
  • Depolarisation of the postsynaptic membrane may be stimulatory or inhibitory.

Differences

  • Postsynaptic membrane is cell surface membrane (sarcolemma) of a muscle.
  • Neurotransmitter is ACh for skeletal muscle.
  • Depolarisation of the postsynaptic membrane is stimulatory.

Overall comparison

In both, neurotransmitter is secreted, diffuses across a cleft, binds to receptors in the postsynaptic membrane and is finally broken down.
