LONs in 1920s

Advantages

  • Upper Silesia, 1921-25: Vote held to see if Upper Silesia should be part of Germany (60% votes) or Poland (40% votes). League split land between the 2 and it was accepted.
  • Aaland Islands, 1921: Finland and Sweden argued over islands. League decided to give to Finland but no weapons/forts could be kept there. It was accepted.
  • Bulgaria, 1925: Greece invaded Bulgaria after Greek soldiers were shot on the border. LONs told both to withdraw. Greece fined £45,000. Accepted by both.

Disadvantages

  • Vilna, 1920: Poland invades Lithiania where many Poles lived. LONs and France supported Poland as they were seen as an ally against Germany.
  • Corfu, 1923: Italy claimed 5 of their advisers were killed in a Greek plan. Italy demanded Greece to pay a fine but they refused so Italy invaded Greece. LONs were persuaded by Italy to fine Greece.
  • Wall Street Crash, 1929: Economies all around Europe were collapsing. League was powerless and could not stop people from turning to extremist parties like the Nazis.

Evaluation

The LONs was both a success and a failure.
