It is only the state of the world today that makes millenarian views attractive to people.

Advantages

  • Warms, famines etc seen as Johns apocalyptic visions of the end time. (tribulation- period of suffering and destruction).Make the beliefs seem more realistic to some people.
  • State of world can also occur to the changes in legislation and religious teachings. Millenarian offers definite literal interpretations of Bible which may be more attractive to people than the idea of a secular society.
  • Rise in 60's and 70's when these world events were on the increase. Creates a panic.

Disadvantages

  • Do not explain the attraction of the actual theology of many millenarian groups. May contribute to the attractive but unlikely it is the 'only' this.
  • Several of the NRMs come from late 19th century/early 20th when these factors were not significant.
  • Could be argued that other aspects of millenarianism is more attractive e.g. the community aspect that it offers.

Evaluation

Although it does seem that the state of the world is what makes the views attraction to people it would be realistic to say that it is 'only this' clearly NRMs existed in the past so there must be other reasons.
