Independent Measures Design

?

Independent Measures Design - each condition has its own group of p's, the scores (DV) for each group are compared

Advantages

  • no order effects
  • less time consuming

Disadvantages

  • researcher cannot control the effects of participant variables (i.e. different characteristics or abilities of each participant). This would cause a confounding variable.
  • needs more design than the Repeated Measures Design in order to end up with the same amount of data

Evaluation

(note: this section is meant to say 'Solution' not evaluation). Solution: Random Allocation - All p's names in a hat, first P's name out: condition 1, second P's name out: condition 2, etc. This will minimise the risk of significant variables acting as a confounding variable.
