Imprisonment as an effective punishment:

Advantages

  • Protects civilians
  • Keeps dangerous people out of society
  • Some believe people should be punished for crimes
  • People might not feel safe in a society without imprisonment
  • Some can be rehabilitated in prison through work experience and qualifications

Disadvantages

  • Some believe it should only be used for the most dangerous criminals
  • There's almost no help for people with learning disabilities or mental illnesses
  • Minor criminals have contact with worse criminals
  • There's a high reoffending rate
  • Young people are vulnerable
  • Some believe it should be a last resort
  • Prison is expensive
  • There are other alternatives such as meeting the victim to rehabilitate the offender

Evaluation

I don't think the current prison system is effective as most criminals reoffend after release. However, I think that imprisonment is a good option for criminals who have committed crimes such as murder as they won't be leaving prison for a long time, but for minor criminals who spend only a few months in prison, it isn't effective.
