How similar were Robert Aske and Francis Bigod?

Similarities

  • Both were members of the Yorkshire gentry + therefore had several connections with other gentry + nobility members..
  • Bigod + Aske were similar in their opposition to the supremacy as they both had reformist views which made them concerned about king’s supremacy over the Church.
  • Bigod feared Henry’s Erastian view of kingship would mean more royal interference in Church affairs; believed only clergymen should decide on the doctrine + organisation of the Church.

Differences

  • Bigod had become a committed evangelical + he’d even been involved in implementing Cromwell’s reforms in the Yorkshire region.
  • Bigod wasn’t Catholic + lacked the natural ability to co-ordinate + lead a popular rising unlike Aske who had legal training + appealed to both the gentry + the commons.
  • Bigod’s religious convincations were the opposite of the Catholic Aske’s- he translated religious works from the Latin so that he could use them + paid the cost of several preachers

Overall comparison

They both had connections with other gentry and nobility which could allow them to be easily persuaded to join the rebellions. They both also had reformist views about the supremacy but Aske wanted a restoration of the Catholic Church whereas Bigod was more concerned about the king's supremacy. Furthermore, differences also lie in their religions; Bigod wasn't Catholic and lacked the natural leadership ability Aske had which made him fail to raise any local support and lead the men who were Catholic. Aske on the other hand, had legal training and was able to achieve a balance between the demands of the gentry and the commons in the Pontefract Articles.
