Option 2 - national farm advisory

Advantages

  • PEOPLE:
  • Fertilisers + pesticides increase productivity
  • A wider variety of crops can be grown with new seeds
  • WEALTH:
  • Increased productivity means surplus crops can be sold for income
  • ENVIRONMENT:
  • Fertilisers will increase the soil fertility, so more crops are likely to grow

Disadvantages

  • WEALTH:
  • Fertilisers + pesticides are expensive to buy for rural farmers
  • If machinery breaks, the parts will need to be replaced, which is expensive
  • ENVIRONMENT:
  • New seeds may not be able to grow in the local environment, so money would be wasted buying them
  • PEOPLE:
  • Not all smallholders will have access to the service

Evaluation

Option 2 is for the issue of 'rural poverty'. There is a large issue of cost that many of the goods and services provided will be too expensive for the people, such as the cost of fertilisers + machinery. Also, there is the issue of access to the services and new seeds not growing. However, there would mainly be benefits to the people such as increasing productivity and income. This could lead to people in rural areas being able to leave the cycle of poverty and improve the overall quality of their lives.
