Evaluate Herzberg's theory.

Advantages

  • management will be able to reduce hygiene factors to a minimum if they know what they are
  • specific factors leading to job satisfaction relate to the job itself - gets the most out of their employees
  • new challenges + icreasinng level of responsibility for employees leads to increased job satisfaction
  • shows commitment to employees + recognition of their effort
  • some motivators/demotivators are in control of managers

Disadvantages

  • assumes that everyone seeks motivators such as increased responsibility
  • some organisations may require a bureaucratic regime + autocratic leadership style - theory may not be acceptable
  • main insight was that unless the job itself was interesting there was no way of making working life more satisfying
  • some jobs are difficult to enrich + job enrichment is expensive for many firms
  • job satisfaction does not guarantee improved motivation + productivity
  • he only used a limited sample of 200 accountants + engineers so it is questioned whether it can be applied to all workers

Evaluation

FREDERICK V. HERZBERG (born 1923) - 'two-factor' theory = 'hygiene' factors - caused people to be dissatisfied + motivating factors which he called satisfiers. Fulfilling these hygiene factors wouldn't cause motivation but would simply prevent demotivation: company policies, supervision, relationships, work conditions, remuneration, salary + security. He noted that motivators were more related to the job itself, most important motivators were: achievement, recognition, the work itself, responsibility, advancement + growth.
