- can be linked to achievement + promotion
- make employees more loyal to company - retain staff for longer
- workers + managers identify more closely w/ company objectives - understand they will benefit if company does well
- rewards employees w/o increasing wage or salary

Disadvantages
- add on additional costs to company
- can be more common at senior level - lead to resentment further down hierarchy
- once becomes normal will no longer act as a motivator
