Advantages

  • may satisfy basic needs outlined by Maslow
  • can be linked to achievement + promotion
  • make employees more loyal to company - retain staff for longer
  • workers + managers identify more closely w/ company objectives - understand they will benefit if company does well
  • rewards employees w/o increasing wage or salary

Disadvantages

  • add on additional costs to company
  • can be more common at senior level - lead to resentment further down hierarchy
  • once becomes normal will no longer act as a motivator
