Effect of Globalisation on Place

Advantages

  • Easier connection of places which means places that felt isolated no longer feel isolated and connected into the global village
  • Cheaper and Easier trade which allows for introduction of goods from new cultures into a place which may start a sense of excitement to locals
  • May introduce new industry into an area (improved technology connections) will reduce unemployment and alleviate poverty

Disadvantages

  • Locals may longer not feel at home and may start to feel negatively about the place as changes occur
  • Increase in clone towns
  • Large TNCs may drive out local businesses
  • places lose their sense of uniqueness

Evaluation

Globalisation will help improve a place in terms of its economy and its connection to the global village, it will expose the residents to other cultures in the world which may make the place more culturally diverse. However globalisation does not help everyone and will harm local businesses who are driven out by large TNCs forming clone towns, and some people may feel their sense of place has been lost an they may start to feel negatively about their home town as changes occur.
