Comparison between The Manhunt and Hour

Similarities

  • Both share the theme of partners and romantic love
  • Time is also a shared theme
  • Both poems have irregular rhyme schemes but both contain some full rhymes

Differences

  • In Manhunt the romantic love is the love from a wife who shows care and patience to nurse injured soldier (husband) whereas Hour is about how time is the enemy of true love
  • Hour is between time being the enemy of love whereas Manhunt is about the time it will take the solider (both mentally and physically) to recover
  • Stanza lengths are different:                                                 Couplets in Manhunt links to how slowly the soldier is healing and how small the steps to recovery are                                  Quatrains in Hour similar to Sonnet structure which links with romantic love
  • The end of each two lines per couplet rhyme in Manhunt up to line 20 and the ryhme scheme then turns irregular. Emphasises how recovery cannot be planned and how slow his recovery is. However, throughout Hour, the poem is a mixture of half rhymes and full rhymes. This shows that love cannot be controlled and how other things will overcome it - in this case it is time

Overall comparison

Both poems share themes of partners, romantic love and time but are presented differently. They both include irregular rhymes, half rhymes and full rhymes but their stanza lengths differ
