Chomsky's model

Chomsky's model

Advantages

  • What the model says can be proven in everyday life if you are around young children e.g. young children calling a group of geese 'gooses'
  • What Chomsky tries to prove in his model can be backed up with evidence

Disadvantages

  • Lack of scientific evidence to support theory
  • Overemphasises on grammar in sentence structure
  • Not enough information on how children construct meaning from their sentences
  • Does not take into consideration children with conditions such as Down's Syndrome that may affect or delay their language development

Evaluation

In general, Chomsky's model is good as everything he says is correct. Everything he says he gives an example for to prove his theory right. However, though he gives lots of examples, there is a lack of scientific evidence to support his theory. He overemphasises on grammar in sentence structure rather than how children construct meaning from their sentences. He also does not take conditions such as Down's Syndrome, that may have an impact on a child's language development, into consideration.
