Caregiver-infant interactions

Advantages

  • The observational research has good validity. The infant-caregiver interactions are filmed from different angles to ensure that fine detail is captured and later analysed. The behaviour of the infants also doesn't change due to being recorded because they are unaware.
  • There is some evidence that Synchrony and Reciprocity is helpful in the development of mother-infant attachment and in emotional development.

Disadvantages

  • Hard to know what the infants interactions actually mean. Are the infants imitation of adult signals conscious or deliberate? Do they actually have a special meaning?
  • Interactional Synchrony and Reciprocity are a strong phenomena because they can be reliably observed. However, the observation does not tell us the purpose of these.

Evaluation

Infant-Caregiver interaction has both strengths and weaknesses. The main weakness of Infant-Caregiver interactions is that we cannot tell by observing Reciprocity and Interactional Synchrony, whether it actually has a purpose or a special meaning. For example, Is the infants imitation of the mother's behaviour consious or deliberate? It is extremely hard to tell. It is also difficult to find out the purpose of Reciprocity and Synchrony by observation. However, there are strengths of Infant-Caregiver interaction. The observational research has very good validity in that it can be recorded from different angles in order to capture fine details for later analysis. The infant is also unaware of observation, therefore it doesn't change its behaviour. There is some evidence to say that Reciprocity and Synchrony play a role in forming attachment and also in emotional development.
