Brazil in the BRICs group

Strengths

  • Produces half of South America's GDP
  • Has huge natural resources
  • It's an agricultural superpower
  • It's the third largest producer of iron ore, the second largest of biofuel, the fifteenth largest of oil.
  • Is self sufficient in food and energy.
  • They have a global reputation for their footballing nation, having hosted many important global athletic events.
  • It supports global initiatives like the UN conference on climate change
  • Its culture interests many people, especially with their Carnival.

Weaknesses

  • It spends 60% of South America's military budget, however their military is the least significant of all the BRICs. They seem to have the least amount of military assets e.g. aircraft carriers out of the BRICs.
  • They rely on primary products for export, rather than manufacturing.
  • Politically less stable, with accusations of corruption- means that they cannot be very powerful if they are corrupt.

Opportunities

  • If they stabilize the government, they could become more of a powerful country, as economy is a key factor in the country becoming a superpower.
  • If they focus on improving their political state, then they could be a more powerful country.
  • They could spend more time on their military to help improve its significance within the group. e.g. more training or improved training techniques.
  • It could become a superpower if it had more focus on manufacturing (they could earn more money from producing more manufactured goods)
  • iron ore, biofuel and oil can all be sold at a profit to other countries.

Threats

  • Major environmental issues, which threaten their wide range of biodiversity (they currently have a large biodiversity due to the Amazon rainforest which holds a large range of animals- 13% of all known species)
  • Deforestation, illegal poaching and pollution (from mining activities and oil spills) has a devastating effect on the local environment.  The Amazon rainforest in vital the worlds ecosystem and its destruction has an affect on a large amount of people.
  • There have been protests every year since 2013 caused by perceived government corruption and government spending cuts. This would have an effect on their status within the BRICs
