Advantages and Disadvantages of Bypass Surgery vs Stents

Advantages

  • Stents are inserted quickly (within 1-2 hours) and the patient only has to stay overnight.
  • The patient can resume normal activities within a week if stents are inserted.
  • In bypass surgery, fatty deposits are less likely to build up as bypass surgery uses veins. Veins have a larger lumen and therefore help blood flow more easily.
  • Bypass surgery is general anaesthetic (asleep).

Disadvantages

  • In bypass surgery, it takes 3 months to fully recover as it is open-heart surgery.
  • Fatty substances may build up in stents over the years (may depend on diet).
  • Inserting stents is local anaesthetic (awake).

Evaluation

Stents prop open narrowed arteries and allow the patient to resume usual activity within a week.
