- What problems does Ghana have?
- Economic
- Reliant on cocoa - when the price fell it left Ghana with a shortage of income
- Exploitation from other countries left Ghana very poor and dependent on cocoa
- Poverty is most severe among food crop farmers
- Borrowed too much money - in lots of debt
- 6 out of 10 small scale farmers are poor
- As Ghhana was only free from colonisation in 1957, the country faces many debt problems
- More than half the women who head households in rural areas are among the poorest 20% of the population
- Local/small scale farmers will decline so families will be forced into poverty
- Environmental
- Chop down cocoa trees to gain more money
- Overgrazing of cattle
- Increased drought and wind redoing - soil erosion and desertification
- More trees being cut down
- Northern Ghana risks becoming desert
- Social
- Division between men and women in society
- Over 100,000 people per year were bought for slavery
- Chronic food insecurities and vulnerable livelihoods
- The North of Ghana still faces serious poverty problems
- Poor access to social services, safe water, safe roads and electricity or telecommunications
- Over half the population lives in rural regions - less financial opportunity
- Exploitation from other countries wanting gold, Ivory, metal ores and cocoa
- No social likes with other countries so not many will help
