    • Lea - rural/urban fringe
      • Large semi-detached and detached houses with gardens and driveways.
      • No out-of-tow n shopping centres but there are small shopping parades and a supermarket.

    • Longton - rural area
      • Large semi-detached and detached houses with gardens and garages
      • Longton village has a supermarket and many shops and services.
      • A59 Longton by pass provides easy access to preston city centre for commuters.
      • 92.7% of houses privately owned.
      • 99.2% of the population are of the ethic group 'white'
      • 88.5% of households have at least one car
      • 1.1% of 16-74 year olds unemployed.
    • Fishwick - Inner city
      • High density terraced houses.
      • 60.5% of houses are privately owned
      • 66.5% of population are in the 'white' ethic group
      • 5.9% of 16-74 year olds are unemployed
      • Has a few corner shops but it doesn't have any parades of shops or shopping centres - people travel to the city for these
      • 57.4% of households own at least one car
    • Different characteristics have implications for social welfare
      • 74% of people in Lea described their general health as 'good' where as in Fishwick only 65% did. - people in Fishwick more likely to live in houses that are cold and damp to due lack of central heating (17.5% houses don't have it vs 5.6%)
      • In fish wick there were 161 crimes per 1000 people compared to 52 in Lea  - could be due to higher levels of unemployment and lower levels of wealth
      • In fishwick 44.7% have no qualifications so they can't apply for highly skilled jobs, explaining why only 15.7% if working population are employed in management/professional sector compared to 30% for lea/longton.
    • Ashton: Suburban Area
      • 2.1% of 16-74 year olds are unemployed
      • 93.2% of the population are of the ethic group 'white'
      • Lane ends shopping area has over 40 shops. Many bus stops with frequent services to the city centre.
      • Terraced housing to the east of the ward, to the west there are larger semi-detached with gardens.
      • 75.7% of households have at least 1 car
