  • Types of Hazard
    • Geophysical
      • Earthquakes
        • build up of tension between the tectonic plates
          • releases energy
            • measured on the richter scale, logarithmic
              • can happen at all plate boundaries
                • can cause tsunamis
      • Landslides
        • movement of soil or rock controlled by gravity
          • heavy rain, soil erosion, earth tremors
            • includes downward and outward movement
              • associated with tropical storms, local storms, river floods
      • Tsunamis
        • caused by earthquakes, tectonic movement
          • series of waves
            • also caused by volcanic activity and mass movement
      • Volcanic Activity
        • happens at all plate boundaries except for conservative
          • shield and composite volcanoes
            • energy builds up in the magma chamber
              • pyroclastic flows and what not
                • volcanic  winter
      • Caused mostly by tectonic movements
    • Hydrological
      • Floods
        • general floods can be predicted in advance except for flash floods
          • often damage to property is the main impact
            • floodline, website
              • armed forces
                • emergency services respond almost immediately
                  • local or nationwide media coverage depending on severity
      • Avalanches
        • mechanical failure in a snowpack
          • flowing snow and air
            • can be due to melting snow
              • engulfs anyone in its path
      • Tropical Storms
        • cyclone, hurricane or typhoon
          • water temp >27C
            • can be predicted several days in advance
              • wind walls
                • calm eye
                  • clockwise in the southern hemisphere, anti-clockwise in the northern hemisphere
      • Caused by water movements, water energy, precipitation, etc
    • Atmospheric
      • Wildfires
        • dry air
          • high pressure
            • hot hot hot
              • low pressure can cause it to spread quicker
      • Drought
        • destroys an area over time
          • can last for many years
            • affects agriculture and water supplies
              • can lead to food insecurities, famine, malnutrition, epidemics and population displacement
                • desertificatioo-nnnnnn
      • Tornadoes
        • rotating column of air
          • mostly in contact with the surface and a comulonimbu-s cloud
      • Caused mostly by wind movements and the climate
    • By the illustrator of Mr. Parrot
