- 1) The threat of terrorism.
- 1) PFLP (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine). In 1970, they seized 4 airlines, 3 of which were flown to Jordan and blown up in front of the world's media.
- 2) IRA (Irish Republican Army). Terror tactics used against the British in Northern Ireland. Included bomb outrages in both Northern Ireland and Britain.
- 3) 9/11, 11 Sept 2001, a number of suicide attacks on USA by al-Qaeda, an Islamic terrorist organisation. Terrorist hijacked 4 commercial jet airliners and crashed two of them into the Twin Towers in New York. Nearly 3000 deaths. US reacted by declaring a 'War on Terrorism'.
- 2) The 2nd Gulf War.
- 1) March 2003, USA and other forces invaded Iraq. 1 reason given by George Bush (US President at the time) and the Prime Minister, Tony Blair, was that they wanted to free the people of Iraq.
- 2) US & British intelligence prepared for the invasion by carefully targeting senior leadership targets, in particular, Saddam Hussein and his leading generals.
- 3) There was a relatively quick overthrow of Saddam Hussein due to several reasons...
- 4) Preparations of the mainly US intelligence services.
- 5) Iraqi army was poorly equipped.
- 6) They also suffered from low morale and had poor commanders and lack of leadership.
- 3) Nuclear War.
- 1) Countries like North Korea have carried out nuclear tests since 1998.
- 1) The threat of terrorism.
