  • The parable of the Sheep and the Goats
    • Parable: A short story or simple saying which illustrates a moral, spiritual or religious idea
    • Matthew 25 forms the setting of this parable in the form of farming life.
    • The practice at the time was for goats and sheep to grave together during the day but at night they were separated to different pens.
      • As sheep are worth more than goats, they were placed in a more secure pen.
        • The teaching of the parable is that even though there is no reward at the moment for moral behaviour, we will be rewarded when judgement day comes with eternal life for the ones who lived righteously.
    • For the members of Matthews community, they may have thought following the Torah would be enough to earn a place in Heaven, it may come as a shock for those individuals to learn justified behaviour without the thought of a Heavenly reward will be rewarded eternal life.
      • Another surprise could be that Christians aren't necessarily the ones who are only rewarded eternal life, but anyone who had shown moral behaviour.
      • This point is emphasised by theologians today when considering the question of whether non-Christians can be saved or receive God's grace
    • "Immediately after the suffering of those days, the sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light" - Matthew 24:29
