What is the Kingdom of God?
Describes God's rule or reign whether in this world or in the next world or in heaven.

What are the three ways in which we can interpret the Kingdom of God?

What is the story of the Rich man and Lazarus?
The rich man ignores Lazarus (who is poor, ill and hungry) who lays at his gate. They both die at the same time. Lazarus found himself in heaven with the righteous and the rich man in hell, and is being punished for not helping Lazarus.

What are the four problems with the Kingdom of God?
The delay of the parousia (the second coming). Place (where is it). Time and judgement (final < personal judgment). Purgatory (those who died in grace can continue to seek forgiveness and receive punishment until final judgement.

What is the parable of the sheep and the goats?
The story which separates the sheep (those who did good and helped the poor) and the goats (who are self centred and don't help anybody). God rewards the sheep with heaven and the goats are sent to hell.

What is the spiritual state? (origen)
A state where punishment is not given by God, but rather where we are at anguish for being separated from God. It isn't permanent and will pass away when the world is redeemed.

What is the conscience? (Gregory of Nyssa)
Judgement and the torture of hell are the result of guilty conscience when a person is placed in front of christ.

What is Dante's view?
The nine circles of hell. The further you go down, the worse the sins committed were. In the bottom circle, Lucifer fans freezing air onto the traitors who are frozen in place.

What is a mortal sin?
A sin which is morally gravely deficient, deliberately willed and in defiance of God's law.

What is a venial sin?
A sin which is an error of judgement and lack of moral knowledge, which can be absolved through repentance.

What is Dante's view of purgatory?
It is where those who believe in Christ and have repented before death, have the opportunity to purge themselvesof all wrongful desires and action and are now unable to sin. The process is positive and unlike hell.

What is John Hick's view on the intermediate state?
He argues that the need for the intermediate state makes logical sense as the gap between the individual's imperfection at the end of this life and the perfect heavenly state in which he is to participate has to be bridged.

What is Dante's vision of heaven?
It is beyond description.The rational soul yearns for the ultimate good and harmony with God's love. We can be one with God.

What is the Catholic teaching on beatific vision?
The final and perfect human state of everlasting happiness and knowledge of God. For the righteous it is achieved after death in heaven.

What is limited election?
Salvation and reward of heaven in the afterlife is only for those whom God, out of his graciousness, chooses and judged to be righteous.

What is unlimited election?
The God of love calls all people to salvation and to achieve perfection, the promise of heaven in the afterlife is possible for all.

God elects only those whom he ordains to enter heaven and eternal life.

God elects only those whom he ordains to enter heaven and eternal life and also decrees that the reprobate are destined for hell and damnation.

God decreed who were the elect at the moment of creation before the fall.

God decreed who were the elect after the fall.

What does Calvin say?
God's will is hidden. What God reveals to humans takes into account their limited knowledge. God wills his mercy for all. Christians have a duty to preach their religion to everyone. Both the elect and non-elect have a duty to act morally.

What is Aquinas' view?
Single predestination- God chooses the elect, the wicked select hell for themselves.

What is universalism?
The belief that hell is not eternal and that the eschatological goal of the cosmos is perfection and restoration of the world to its pre-fall state.

What does John Hick contribute to universalism?
He supports it and believes that God isn't a God of judgement and exclusion which hell requires. What purpose does it serve to punish someone indefinitely?

What does Karl Barth say?
He argues that it is not for humans to speculate on the mystery of salvation and the fate of individuals. As the elector and elected God reveals in Christ his friendliness towards all of humanity that through his grace it might be restored.
