Heaven is a symbol of a persons moral and spiritual life as an experienced person on this earth rather than after death e.g. people talk of being in heaven when they are blissfully happy

:Hell as a physical place: (Augustine)
A physical place where people go after death, where there is physical suffering and pain. Argued hell was a literal lake of fire

Hell as a physical place: A02 criticism
Would an all loving God allow people to suffer in this way

Hell as a Spiritual state: (Pope John Paul 2nd)
An eternal state that people experience after death. Hell is the state your soul will experience because of being separated from God. God is omnibenevolent, but this can be expressed through giving us free will an enforcing justice (sins).

Hell as a symbol: (Satre - French 20th Century philosopher)
Very poor quality of life: e.g. Grief, exam stress, mental health issues. Satre said "Hell is other people" . He believed that pressure from other people stopped you from truly expressing yourself, and led you to conform to society

Purgatory as a physical place: (John Hick)
Hick believes that purgatory is a physical place

Purgatory as a spiritual place:
Someone might be in purgatory as they recognise their earthly sins and ways that which they have fell short of God's standards

"Metaphor for the souls greater awareness of consequences of sin in the time between death and the last judgement.

Believed P was when Christians were torn between following Jesus' teachings and giving into temptation

Election:
Controversial idea that God teaches the eternal destiny for each person. The ide that God knows where will bein the afterlife, before we are even born.
