- The king
- Lords
- about 50% of land went to barons
- Roger Bigod owned 6 manors in Essex, 117 in Suffolk and 187 in Norfolk.
- Knights owned about 5% of the land and considerably fewer manors. all nobles and knights holding land were known as lords
- Church
- owned 25% of land
- Religion was an important part of medieval life and kings were keen to keep the Pope happy and to show respect for God.
- Church lands were expected to provide knights for the king. To provide money to pay for these the Church also rented it land to free men or lesser nobles.
- Royal Demesne
- owned 20% of the land
- Paid managers ran this land on the king's behalf and rented much of it out to free men. This gave the king a regular income with which to pay soldiers if he needed to.
- Some of the royal demesne was kept for royal hunting
