  • The king
    • Lords
      • about 50% of land went to barons
      • Roger Bigod owned 6 manors in Essex, 117 in Suffolk and 187 in Norfolk.
      • Knights owned about 5% of the land and considerably fewer manors.  all nobles and knights holding land were known as lords
    • Church
      • owned 25% of land
      • Religion was an important part of medieval life and kings were keen to keep the Pope happy and to show respect for God.
      • Church lands were expected to provide knights for the king.  To provide money to pay for these the Church also rented it land to free men or lesser nobles.
    • Royal Demesne
      • owned 20% of the land
      • Paid managers ran this land on the king's behalf and rented much of it out to free men.  This gave the king a regular income with which to pay soldiers if he needed to.
      • Some of the royal demesne was kept for royal hunting
