    • Causes
      • The Netherlands were part of the  Spanish Empire.
        • The Inquisition was a political and religious body set up to keep Spanish territories faithful to Catholicism.
      • Philip of Spain re-organised the Dutch government, and bringing in the Inquisition.
    • Results
      • The Dutch revolted, as a result being crushed by the Duke of Alba, in1568.
        • Thousands of mainly Protestant Dutch were condemned to death, meaning thousands flew to England for refuge.
          • Elizabeth refused to take in the Dutch as it could mean that the Duke of Alba could invade. England wouldn't cope with a war.

      • The Spanish government in the Netherlands went brankrupt from the ongoing war.
        • The lack of pay for the Spanish troops, meant they rebelled.
          • They rempaged and 'sacked' the city of Antwerp.
