  • the 3 marks of existence
    • anicca
      • dukkha
        • suffering
        • there are 7 states that are divided into 2 types
          • 1. birth, old age, death and illness - all caused by samsara
          • not getting what you want, contact with unpleasant things and sorrow lamentation or despair - the type of suffering that ppl experienmce in their lives
        • dukkha-dukkhata         suffering caused by mental or physical pain
        • vipariname -dukkha            caused by change
          • which can be felt during happiness as happiness does not last
        • samkhara- dukkha            caused by attachment
          • a subtle dissatisfaction of lkife
      • impermenance of everything
      • it affects the world in 3 ways
        • living things: birth is followed by decay and then death
        • non-living things: irons nails rust
        • our minds: our thought, values and morals change over time
      • kisa gotami's child died and so she went to the buddha for a cure for death
        • he said to get a mustard seed from every family that had never lost someone
          • she came back empty handed and she understood anicca
    • anatta
      • no fixed soul or self
      • nagasena said tht "nagasena" is just the name of a group of organs
        • just like a chariot is name for 4 wheels, seat, axles etc.
