  • gender socialisation evaluation
    • Chivalry hypothesis
      • Suggests women commit more crimes than OS suggests
      • police , magistrates, judges tend to be men - socialised to act in a more chivalrous way towards women
      • Pollak 1950 - men in CJS tend to have more protective attitude towards women, women less likely to be arrested, charged, prosecuted or convicted
      • Suggests not only gender of person demonstrating criminal behaviour, also gender of CJS responsible for lower levels of female crime seen in statistics
    • Men are less likely to be punished
      • May be fewer women being prosecuted, but CJS may actually be biased against women
      • Carlen 1997 - women perceived as ‘good’ less likely to be imprisoned than women with children in care system, argues itis assessment of overall character of the woman in relation to traditional gender roles rather than severity of offence determining sentence
      • Males generally commit more violence and server officers, get let off comparatively lightly, they are only overstepping expectations set for their gender. Women are breaking their gender role
      • Suggests difference between men and women in terms of criminality is greater than imprisonment rates suggest
