- Shelia
- At the start of the play she is quite relaxed, and getting engaged to Gerald
- Although she says she can't "feel engaged" until she has the ring , the symbolism of the expensive wedding ring suggests she is materialistic and very concerned with her appearance.
- Shelia is concerned where Gerald has been, "last summer, when you never came near me and I wondered what had happened to you". This creates tension and foreshadows the conflict that is to come later when we learn exactly where Gerald was
- As Shelia responsiblity to Eva's death is revealed she appears quite selfish
- "I told him that if they didn't get rid of that girl, I'd never go near the place again."
- Unlike her parents she shows remorse for her actions, 'as if she's been crying' (stage direction)
- Priestley uses Sheila to show how the younger generation can change and take social responsibility
- She's had to take little responsibility for her actions in the past
- She grows in confidence
- Shelia's change in character contrasts her parents as they remain with their capatilist views
- At the start of the play she is quite relaxed, and getting engaged to Gerald
