Inspector Calls- Chapter SUMMARY

'Perfect' family at dinner celebrating Shelia's and Gerald's engagement. Athur in a good mood giving speeches of his views of the world, tech and industrial relations. MAIN THEME IS THERE IS NO SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY for Mr Birling, he is responsible for his family and himself.

Mrs Birling protects family's reputation. Eric works in family business.

Inspector Goole is announced Birling + Gerald make a joke of Eric. Eric responds strongly showing his guilty conscience. Inspector informs that a girl commits suicide by drinking disinfectant. Inspector knows of the family's involvement before they actually talk it seems.

Birling sacked the girl 2 yrs ago, she led the strike for a higher wage feels no remorse.Shelia is responsible for Eva being sack in Milwards because she was jealous of Eva. Shelia is remorseful and horrified at what she did.

Eva changes name to Daisy Renton. Gerald reacts. Shelia is alone with him for a moment and warns him not to hide anything.

END audience expects the inspector to reveal more connections with the rest of the characters.

Gerald instits Shelia leaves but she stays. He admits to having an affair to Daisy Renton in the previous summer when he had told  Shelia he was too busy working. Shelia is hurt and disappointed and she gives the engagment ring back to Gerald.

We learn he broke the affair and Daisy/Eva leaves for a few months. Gerald leaves due to him being upset about learning of her death.

Shelia warns Mrs Birling to not intimidate the inspector but she does so anyways and believes she has no ties with the girl. Inspector reminds her of a pregnant woman away from her charity organisation. She admits to it but feels no remorse and her actions were justified because Eva/Daisy lied and said her name was MRS BIRLING. She also didn’t believe her claim when she told her she didn’t want to take the father's money because she believed he was stealing it.

Mrs Birling says she believes the father should pay and digs herself a bigger hole. Eric returns but re-enters with expectant faces.

END we expect him it be the father

Eric realises they know so he tells them how he met Eva/Daisy. He is questioned closely by the inspector and reveals he tried to support the girl by stealing money from his father's business. The Birlings are more horrified that he stole money rather than getting a girl pregnant.

Inspector finishes his job and leaves them with a speech- he talks of social responsibility and how they all need to examine their behaviour.

Geral re-enters and reveal there is no Inspector Google. Him and Mr Birling try and disprove the case but Shelia + Eric feel as though it isn't the point.Gerald calls the infirmary and reveals no girl has died from drinking Disinfectant all delighted. Mood from ACT1 returns but Shelia+Eric don't feel the same. They are appalled by all of their behaviour and still feel guilty.Birling tells Shelia to take back the engagement ring but she believes it's too soon.

Birling teases the two because of their lack of humour.

TELEPHONE RINGS- Briling is stunned reveals that a girl has died from drinking Disinfectant and an inspector will be over soon to question them all.

END we wonder who the inspector actually was and if they will change like Sheila & Eric.
