    • Chemistry
      • States of Matter
        • The particles in solids, liquids and gases have different amounts of energy.
          • They are arranged differently and move in different ways.
            • The kinetic particle theory explains the properties of the different states of matter.
              • The air is a mixture of gases. The amount of water vapour in the air varies from place to place, and day to day
    • Biology
      • Effects of drugs on the body
        • Stimulants and depressants affect the synapses between neurones in the nervous system
        • Stimulants: cause more neurotransmitter molecules to diffuse across the synapse
          • Some drugs are illegal, or must only be prescribed by a doctor
            • Some prescription drugs are misused and taken for recreational use, rather than medical reasons
    • Physics
    • Extra-Science
  • Types of waves
    • Water waves and S waves are also transverse waves
    • Physics
  • Electricity Safety
    • Electricity is a useful form of energy but it can also be very dangerous.
      • Pushing metal objects into plug sockets
        • Damaged or incorrectly wired plugs
          • Touching frayed electrical cables
            • Allowing water or wet objects to enter plug sockets or touch frayed cables

                      • Allowing water or wet objects to enter plug sockets or touch frayed cables
      • There are lots of ways in which we can be electrocuted
        • Long or overheating cables

            • There are lots of ways in which we can be electrocuted
              • Long or overheating cables
      • Gases In Air
        • For this reason, the proportions of the gases in the air are usually given for dry air
          • Fractional distillation of air
            • About 78% of the air is nitrogen and 21% is oxygen.
              • These two gases can be separated by fractional distillation of liquid air
                • Liquefying the air
                  • Air is filtered to remove dust, and then cooled in stages until it reaches -200*C
                    • At this temperature it is a liquid. The air has been liquefied
      • The Universe
        • Scientists have gathered a lot of evidence and information about the Universe.
          • They have used their observations to develop a theory called the Big Bang.
            • The theory states that about 13.7 billion years ago all the matter in the Universe was concentrated into a single incredibly tiny point
              • This began to enlarge rapidly in a hot explosion, and it is still expanding today
                • Scientists have also detected cosmic microwave background radiation or CMBR
                  • This is received from all parts of the Universe and is thought to be the heat left over from the original explosion
                    • Redshift
                      • You may have noticed that when an ambulance or police car goes past, its siren is high-pitched as it comes towards you, and then becomes low-pitched as it goes away
                        • This effect, where there is a change in frequency and wavelength, is called the Doppler effect
                          • It happens with any wave source that moves relative to an observer
                            • This happens with light, too, and is called 'red-shift'
                              • Our sun contains helium. We know this because there are black lines in the spectrum of the light from the Sun where helium has absorbed light
                                • These lines form the absorption spectrum for helium
      • Diet
        • The sources and main functions of the different components in a balanced diet are:
          • Carbohydrates Proteins Lipids
            • Too little food may cause starvation. Too much food, particularly fatty food, may cause obesity and coronary heart disease
              • Vitamins are only needed in small amounts to maintain a healthy body
                • A lack of vitamins in the diet leads to deficiency symptoms
                  • Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is needed to help heal wounds and maintain healthy connective tissue (which gives support to other tissues and organs)
