    • Negotiations
      • involves discussing issues with the aim of producing an agreement
      • used to resolve many different kinds of conflicts
      • can be formal or informal - may involve trained negotiators acting on behalf of a group
    • Diplomacy
      • Negotiations between countries - usually involves trained negotiators : Diplomats or Ambassadors
      • Most countries have a diplomatic service to maintain international relations and negotiate agreements, alliances and peace treaties
      • Cultural differences may affect diplomacy - so diplomats are trained to act reasonably and follow certain rules of behaviour
    • Mediation
      • involves the groups at conflict meeting with a mediator
        • they aim to make sure the groups listen to and understand each other
          • they try to find ways of reaching an agreement
      • All sorts of conflicts involve mediators
        • mediators of international conflicts include countries, non- governmental organisations and inter-governmental organisations
    • Planning Laws
      • Proposed developments often cause conflict over space and local resources
      • When a development is proposed, planning officers first make sure that the development  sticks to planning laws
        • if it doesnt they can asked for the proposal to be changed
      • Planning committees discuss the proposals considering:
        • Views of all interested parties
        • Whether the gains from the development outweigh the negative impacts
        • Whether the proposed development has wider benefits outside of the local area
      • The committee take all of theses factors into account and then make a decision about the proposed development
        • Plans will be accepted oor rejected, or they may ask for the plans to be modified and resubmitted
        • If plans are rejected the developers can go through an appeals process agains the decision
    • Conflict Resolution may not make everyone happy
      • WIN-LOSE outcome - one side gains other loses
      • WIN-WIN outcome - both sides gain
      • LOSE-LOSE outcome - both sides lose
