- exercise increases the levels of CO2 in the blood - increases acidity of the blood
- these changes are detected by chemoreceptors - send nerve impulses to the cardiac centre (in medulla oblongata)
- adjusts nerve stimulation to the SAN with decreased vagal and increased sympathetic impulses to increase HR
- SAN rate is altered by autonomic nervous system
- parasympathetic vagus nerve slows HR
- sympathetic nerve speeds up HR
- release of adrenaline increases HR prior to exercise
