    • exercise increases the levels of CO2 in the blood - increases acidity of the blood
    • these changes are detected by chemoreceptors - send nerve impulses to the cardiac centre (in medulla oblongata)
      • adjusts nerve stimulation to the SAN with decreased vagal and increased sympathetic impulses to increase HR
    • SAN rate is altered by autonomic nervous system
    • parasympathetic vagus nerve slows HR
    • sympathetic nerve speeds up HR
    • release of adrenaline increases HR prior to exercise
