- Instrumentation
- Sitar - a plucked stringed instrument with a long neck.
- Tabla - a pair of drums. The right is called the dayan. The left is called the bayan which is larger so has a lower pitch.
- Rhythm
- 1st Tal used: Jhaptal, a 10 beat cycle
- A Tal is a rhythmic pattern played on the drums. It is a cycle of beats that is repeated and improvised.
- 2nd Tal used: Tintal, a 16 beat cycle

- 1st Tal used: Jhaptal, a 10 beat cycle
- Structure
- 1st: Alap - sitar only, slow and no regular pulse, introduces notes of the rag, melodic line is decorated with meends.
- 2nd: Gat - tabla enters, sitar plays a fixed composition, sitar and tabla then improvise, end witha tihai a short melody or rhythm played three times, tempo increases.
- 3rd: Jhala - music is fast and the sitar strings are strummed.

- Based on the notes of the rag.
- Ascending starting on middle C - C, D, F, G, B, C
- Descending starting an octave obove middle C - C, B flat, A, G, F, E, D, C
- Based on the notes of the rag.
