  • PSYCHODYNAMIC CAUSES OF ABNORMALTY
    • THE STRUCTURE OF THE PSYCHE
      • The mind is influenced by 3 forces: the id, the ego and superego. Abnormality is caused an imbalance in the psyche
    • PSYCHOSEXUAL DEVELOPMENT
      • Abnormality is caused by fixation on psychosexual stages
      • Oral stage: oral traits such as smoking, especially when stressed
      • Anal stage:  possible obsession with cleanliness
      • Phallic stage: anxiety and inadequacy
      • Genital stage: fixation from early years become active and affect behaviour
    • PSYCHODYNAMIC THERAPIES-PSYCHOANALYSIS
      • Psychoanalysis is a 'talking therapy' that aims to bring unbconscious  thoughts into consciencness
        • Free Association: client relaxes and speaks freely about whatever comes to mind to encourage unconscious thougts to emerge
        • Dream Analysis: the therapist analyses the latent(symbolic) content of dreams to uncover unconscious wish fulfilment
    • DO PYCHODYNAMIC THERAPIES WORK?
      • They take a long time and can be very expensive. They seek to identify the hidden problem so judging effectiveness is difficult.
      • Grunbaum(1993)-therapy provides a placebo effect, its being treated that helps, not the treatment itself
      • Eysenck(1952)-psychodynamic therapies do not work. Recovery relates to natural improvement (spontaneous remission)
      • Freud's case studies, e.g. Anno O and the Rat Man, demonstrate the effects of the unconscious behaviour and the success of  psychodynamic therapy as a treatment
  • Free Association: client relaxes and speaks freely about whatever comes to mind to encourage unconscious thougts to emerge
