    • Challenged for power
      • Surrounded by men who had served her male relatives
      • She imposed strict authority over parliament and was not afraid to arrest potential conspirators
        • Elizabeth claimed many commodities with patents called monopolies- this was an unpopular move.
    • Religion
      • Lots of religious unease from previous Kings and Queens
      • Elizabeth was a protestant but was practical and allowed Catholics to keep believing- however they claimed she was illegitimate.
      • Puritanism- extreme Protestantism was rising and seen as a threat.
    • Foreign Policy
      • Powerful Catholic countries wanted influence over England- Spain, France.
        • Had the Pope's support
      • The Netherlands' Protestant population was in conflict with the Spanish Catholics
        • Elizabeth would have to sort this out but her main focus was England
    • Taxation
      • Taxing was required for government income but the public were incredibly against it as it was a time of poverty
    • Heir
      • The Queen's next heir was cousin Mary Queen of Scots
        • The public didn't want her to be Queen so Elizabeth had to marry and have a son
        • Mary was exiled in 1568, she was Catholic so many Catholics supported her
    • Ireland
      • Elizabeth considered Queen of Ireland- Irish disagreed
        • There was a revolt in Ireland in 1559- Elizabeth spent lots of money trying to clean it up
