- Martin Luther King (MLK)
- born in January 1929, his father was a Baptist Minister in southern USA
- studies theology & went on to gain a doctorate from Boston University in 1955
- believed passionately in non-violence, but was willing to confront violent situations
- was a mesmerising speaker- most famous speech being 'I have a dream...'
- December 1964: awarded Nobel Peace Prize
- assassinated in 1968
- Montgomery Bus Boycott, 1955-1956
- Montgomery, Alabama, December 1955
- Rosa Parks (civil rights activist) refused to give up her seat for a white man
- she was arrested & convicted of breaking bus laws
- Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA) formed because of this
- MIA decided that the best way to protest & generate publicity was to boycott buses
- first day of boycott: buses were empty & 10 000 - 15 000 people turned out to hear a speech from newly elected MIA president - MLK
- bus company lost 65% of its income
- bus company nearly went to bankruptcy due to lack of income
- bus company had to desegregate due to financial issues
- black community organised a car pool
- December 1956: Supreme Court declared Montgomery's bus laws to be illegal & services like this were illegal
- members of MIA were subjected to massive intimidation
- MLK was arrested twice
- local judges passed an injunction declaring car pool to be illegal
- churches & homes were set on fire
- racially integrated buses were shot at by snipers
