  • Periglacial Areas
    • Areas that are not actually glaciated but exposed to very cold conditions with intense frost action
    • Found on the edges of ice sheets
    • Low temperates
    • Summers are short but temperates can sometimes reach above 15°C
    • Winter temperatures remain below -50°C at times
  • Three kinds of permafrost
    • Continuous
      • All of the ground is frozen in these areas
      • Smaller active layer
      • Found around 65° North is the Arctic Circle
      • Varies from -40°C to -6°C
    • Discontinuous
      • A large percentage of the ground is frozen
      • Active layer is bigger here than in continuous areas
      • Found around 180° North in the Arctic Circle
      • Varies from -6°C to -1°C
    • Sporadic
      • Very little ground is frozen
      • Active layer is the biggest here
      • Found around 180°C North in the Arctic Circle
      • Occurs from -1°C
