- Periglacial Areas
- Areas that are not actually glaciated but exposed to very cold conditions with intense frost action
- Found on the edges of ice sheets
- Low temperates
- Summers are short but temperates can sometimes reach above 15°C
- Winter temperatures remain below -50°C at times
- Three kinds of permafrost
- Continuous
- All of the ground is frozen in these areas
- Smaller active layer
- Found around 65° North is the Arctic Circle
- Varies from -40°C to -6°C
- Discontinuous
- A large percentage of the ground is frozen
- Active layer is bigger here than in continuous areas
- Found around 180° North in the Arctic Circle
- Varies from -6°C to -1°C
- Sporadic
- Very little ground is frozen
- Active layer is the biggest here
- Found around 180°C North in the Arctic Circle
- Occurs from -1°C
- Continuous
