- The research observes the group's behaviour with joining in.
- EXAMPLE: Observation of teachers
- DISADVANTAGES:
- The observer is less likely to understand things the same way as group members.
- The observer effect may come into play; this means the group will change their behaviour if they're aware they're being observed
- ADVANTAGES:
- The researcher is less likely to be drawn into the activities.
- The observer may be less influenced by their personal feelings or opinions around the group, its members and activities.
- The research observes the group's behaviour with joining in.
