  • Non-participant observation
    • The research observes the group's behaviour with joining in.
      • EXAMPLE: Observation of teachers
    • DISADVANTAGES:
      • The observer is less likely to understand things the same way as group members.
      • The observer effect may come into play;  this means the group will change their behaviour if they're aware they're being observed
    • ADVANTAGES:
      • The researcher is less likely to be drawn into the activities.
      • The observer may be less influenced by their personal feelings or opinions around the group, its members and activities.
