- Nevado del Ruiz is a strato-volcano in the mountain range of the Andes. It is the highest coombian volcano with a history of violent activity
- The Nevado del Ruiz was produced by subduction of the Oceanic Nazca plate beneath the South American plate
- Through the centuries a series of movements have occurred along the plate boundary, leading to the formation of the Andes fold mountains
- Nevado del Ruiz has been called the 'sleeping lion' by the local towns around it has been a dormant volcano for nearly 150 years when, in 1985, the volcano did erupt, as a result of which 23,000 people were killed
