- born: 18th July 1918, in Mvezo, South Africa
- member of the royal family of the Tembu people
- father died when he was young & the chief brought him up
- ran away to Johannesburg to get out of an arranged marriage
- studied law at the University of Witwatersrand
- set up the first black law firm with Oliver Tambo in 1952
- Key Events
- In 1947 he became the ANC Youth League's secretary
- In 1952 , he was chosen as 'Volenteer-in-chief' for the Defiance Campaign
- because of this he was tried under the Suppression of Communism Act & found guilty but was given a suspended sentence
- became President of the Transvaal section of the ANC, the government banned him from attending public meetings & from leaving Johannesburg
- In 1953, a new 2 year banning order stopped him from attending the congress that drew up the Freedom Charter
- All of the defendants were found not guilty
- after shrapeville the ANC & the PAC were banned
- in 1960, Mandela co-founded the ANC armed services called 'Umkhonto we Sizwe' ( Spear of the Nation). It was commonly Known as MK
- he slipped out of South Africa in early 1962, to visit other countries to gain support
- when he returned in June he was arrested.
- He was involved in the Rivonia Trial(1963)
- he was sentenced to life imprisonment
- He was still under a banning order which meant that South African newspapers weren't allowed to quote.
