    • The reason for the national government
      • persuaded his duty to stay on--Mcdonald went to resign when visiting the King but he said that he could continue to be prime minister at head of a new nation government based on support from all the main political parties - Temp arrangement
      • Labour cabinet taken by complete surprise people chose to follow him but some didn't - Labour was out but he wasn't . Many accused him of abandoning the Labour party and only thinking of himself
        • not brave enough to consider new ideas so instead went along with the may committee
        • slow to respond to crisis which allowed it to get worse
        • when party split was obvious he didn't resign instead he just showed betrayal
        • Called an election in 1931 even though promised not to
    • 1931-1935 elections
      • conservatives wanted after national government which strengthened there position- won elections
    • National government policies
      • introduced a lot of economic policies to deal with the crisis, financial problems and trade and industry
      • Come off the gold standard, aim to balance the budget, 10% cut in unemployment, cuts in wages, keep value of pound stable
      • set up tariffs to protect births industry, set up sterling area using pound rather than gold
      • provided government aid to most depressed areas, set up market boards, passed acts to provide loans to start building things
    • Leadership
      • NG became increasingly Tory and Baldwin took over from Macdonald then in 1937 chamberlain took over who liked social reforms
