- Lorenz (1935)
- background
- Lorenz found that infants who stayed close to their mothers were more likely to survive and did research to look into this
- He came up with this idea of imprinting and because it's linked to survival, he said it was due to natural selection
- procedure
- Split goose eggs into 2 groups: Group 1 - left with natural mother Group 2 - put in an incubator
- The first thing the geese saw was either their mother (GI) or Lorenz (G2)
- After they hatched, they were marked and mixed up again so Lorenz could see who they followed
- Lorenz also varied the time between hatching and seeing a moving object
- findings
- The group that hatched with their mother imprinted on their mother and followed her around
- The group that hatched with Lorenz followed him
- however, if they did not see something moving around within the first 2 days they would not be able to imprint at all - the critical period
- evaluation
- Strength: support for the concept of imprting
- Limitation: gemeralising from birds to humans
- strength: application to human behaviour
- long lasting effects
- Imprinting is irreversible and long lasting
- One goose who imprinted on Lorenz used to sleep on his bed every night
- Could also affect who tried to mate with later in life
- Geese who had imprinted on their mother displayed mating rituals to other goose
- Geese who had imprinted on Lorenz dipslayed mating rituals to him
