- Kidney Failure
- Most common causes are DIABETES MELLITUS, HYPERTENSION and INFECTION.
- 2 main treatments: DIALYSIS and TRANSPLANT.
- Dialysis: Removes WASTE, excess FLUID and SALT from blood by using a dialysis machine. PARTIALLY PERMEABLE MEMBRANE that allows exchange of substances between BLOOD and DIALYSIS FLUID.
- HAEMODIALYSIS: Blood from a VEIN passed into machine with an ARTIFICIAL dialysis membrane. HEPARIN added to avoid clotting.
- PERITONEAL dialysis: Implants a permanent TUBE into the ABDOMEN. Dialysis SOLUTION poured into tube. After a few hours, used solution is drained and fresh is added.
- Kidney TRANSPLANT: Can be REJECTED as immune system recognises it as foreign. Patients given IMMUNOSUPPRESSANT drugs to help prevent rejection.
- Advantages of kidney transplants: Diet is less limited, freedom, better quality of life, no longer seeing self as chronically ill.
- Disadvantages of kidney transplants: Need immunosuppressants, major surgery, risks of surgery, frequent checks, side effects.
- Pregnancy testing: hCG. Manufactured with MONOCLONAL ANTIBODIES.
- Antibody is SPECIFIC. Sticks to IMMOBILISED antibodies, forms blue line with beads.
