  • How far was Lenin responsible for the Bolshevik's growing hold on power between 1917 and 1924?

      • Popular slogan of Bread, Land and Peace.
      • Had clear and definite aims for Russia and leadership of the party was never challenged.
      • Negotiated the treaty of Brest-Litovsk, which pulled Russia out of the war. This removed the threat of Germany which was one less thing for the Bolsheviks to worry about, but it caused unpopularity among Russians due to the massive territorial concessions that were made.
    • Weakness of opposition and white army
      • There was no individual clear leader of the white army which meant that they were unorganised and inefficient.
      • Opposition to the bolsheviks was extremely fragmented. Other than opposing bolshevism, opposition had no common goals.
    • Red Army + Trotsky
      • Organised the Bolshevik war effort against the whites
      • Imposed extreme punishments and rules in the red army, soldiers would be executed for treachery or cowardice.
      • During times of crisis, Trotsky himself would often visit the front line and take command. He would encourage and inspire troops, in addition to bringing them fresh boots on the front line.

      • The red army were far more well trained and organised than the whites.
    • Geography during civil war
      • In 1918, Bolsheviks controlled the key areas of St Petersburg and Moscow, as well as the Nation's railways.
        • These two cities were Russia's industrial centres, which ensured that the red army troops were always equipped with weapons and ammunition.
      • Trotsky was able to take an armoured train to the front in order to take personal command and bring fresh supplies.
        • In 1918, Bolsheviks controlled the key areas of St Petersburg and Moscow, as well as the Nation's railways.
          • These two cities were Russia's industrial centres, which ensured that the red army troops were always equipped with weapons and ammunition.
      • Control of the population centres of Russia meant that the Bolsheviks had access to fresh recruits.
