  • HAYDN'S STRING QUARTETS
    • The string quartet was a new and important chamber music in the Classical period and Haydn is the person who really shaped the genre.
    • In Vienna the string quartet was played privately, giving the composers more freedom to write as they choose. The string quartet is the only genre Mozart and Haydn wrote for pleasure.
    • The Op. 33 quartets of 1781 were Haydn's first really successful string quartets, and are still frequently played today.
      • In these, each instrument has an independent part - a huge change from his earliest quartets where he used octave doubling.
      • The quartet is nicknamed 'The Joke' because the expected ending of a perfect cadence is subverted by playing the theme fragmented one more time. The audience didn't know when to clap!
