- AIM- To test for context dependency effects caused by the presence or absence of noise during learning and retrieval task.
- CONCLUDE- Noise may not distract study but as performance is worse in mismatched conditions student would benefit from studying in quiet environment as exams are in silence.
- METHOD- Experiment using an independent measures design. The conditions were pairs of either matching or mismatching. Participants always studied and retrieved while wearing headphones.
- Participants read a short meaningful passage and were tested on their recall after a 2 minute break first with a short answer test of 10 questions and then a multiple choice test of 16 questions.
- PARTICIPANTS- 39 participants both genders and aged between 17-56 years.
- DV- Amount of answers correct.
- IV- Matching or mismatching of the conditions 1. noisy-noisy. 2. Silent- silent. 3. Noisy- silent. 4. silent-noisy.
