  • God - Personal and Creator
    • Omnipotence - Creation shows God as all powerful. Only a being of ultimate power would have the ability to create the entire universe.
      • "In the Beginning, God created the heavens and the earth" Genesis 1:3
    • key words
      • Ex-Nihilo
        • Literally means 'out of nothing'. belief that God made the universe from nothing.
          • "Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface" - shows there was nothing on earth before God made anything.
        • "In the beginning" meaning before everything else there was God
      • Immutability
        • means always the same, unable to change.
          • God cannot change and is always the same. God made day and night therefore God created time. So God is beyond time.
            • However some theologians disagree saying God and his actions are different in Old and New Testament.
    • Personal relationships
      • Normal relations - 'I-it' Meaningful relations - 'I-Thou' Relation with God - 'The eternal thou'
        • Martin Buber
        • God never stops wanting this relationship even if people choose not to.
    • Emanation - coming from a source
      • religious terms- means life emanates from God and thus life has something of God in it. "God created mankind in his own image".
        • People are made to be like God = Humans also have potential to be like God "Irenaeus Theodicy we are children of God".
    • Goodness of creation
      • "And God saw it was all good" repeated line - shows creation was good means perfect. also leads to idea - humans spoiled it. links it with Augustine Theodicy - humans unbalance through original sin.
    • Implications from these changes
      • Christians aims to have a personal relationship with God - could be done through worship and prayer.
        • Eden was seen as being like a garden when Mary first saw Jesus, she thought he was a gardener. For many Jesus' Resurrection brings people back to Eden and restores perfection in creation.
          • people can only reach eternity and grace of God if they accept Jesus' sacrifice - afterlife is only available to those who seek a personal relationship with a creator of God.
      • Augustine argue that this relationship was broken at the fall people can never truly regain that relationship - only way to accept grace of God through salvation of Jesus's sacrifice.
