  • Germany: The Weimar Constitution
    • 1) Social Democrats won the election in 1919.
    • 2) held their first meeting in a town called Weimar- hence the name, 'Weimar Government'.
    • 3) 1st Job: write a constitution for Germany.
      • a) anyone age 20+ could vote. they would vote for MPs who would sit in the Reichstag- vote on new laws.
      • b) Chancellor would be head of Reichstag  and voted for every 4 years.
      • c) President would choose chancellor & keep control over army and would be voted for every 7 years
      • d)  Proportional Representation- each political party would get a fair share of the seats in the Reichstag depending on their votes.
        • Lots of problems:  no party ever had a majority of seats so they couldn't pass laws themselves, instead they had to discuss  them which took time.
          • How Hitler soon gained power.
    • Fair especially voting as it allowed alot to have a say.
    • State Government would ensure local issues were addressed.
    • Chancellor and President balanced each other- there was never only  one person in charge
    • A poor President/Chancellor would only be around for a limited time.
    • Proportional Representation- difficult to agree on one thing.
    • Article 48 could be abused- President stop listening to Reichstag.
    • State Govn could pass on laws that went against the Reichstag.
